What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health and developmental condition that affects the functioning of the brain. It is characterized by a pattern of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It can often lead to unstable relationships, poor work or school performance, and low self-esteem. It typically shows up in childhood, but may not be diagnosed until adulthood.

“I cannot recommend Dr. Colleen McGuire highly enough. She has been an incredible support in helping me manage my mental health, and her care has truly been life-changing. From the very beginning, she created a safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental space where I felt heard, valued, and understood.”

Symptoms of ADHD

Symptoms can differ from person to person, especially if you’re a child or an adult. Symptoms can also be mild to severe. That said, some symptoms are more common than others. Common symptoms of ADHD include:

  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Restlessness
  • Impulsiveness
  • Disorganization
  • Poor time management skills
  • Problems focusing on a task
  • Trouble multitasking
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Trouble coping with stress

Risk Factors of ADHD

There are several risk factors that make ADHD more likely in some people than others. One of the main risk factors is genetics. If you have a parent or a sibling with ADHD, you are much more likely to have the condition. Additionally, if you were exposed to environmental toxins, if your mother smoked or drank alcohol during pregnancy, or if you were born prematurely, you are more likely to end up with the condition.

ADHD Treatment Options

Medications

Medication is typically one of the first steps of treatment for ADHD. Stimulants are the most commonly prescribed medication for this condition. They work to boost certain brain chemicals to increase your brain’s function.

Beyond stimulants, antidepressants can also be used if the side effects of stimulants are too severe. Which medication is right for you will depend on your unique needs. During your session with Dr. McGuire, she will ask you questions, discuss your concerns, and determine the right medication for you.

Therapy

Therapy can also help patients learn more about the disorder and the skills they need to address symptoms and be more successful in their lives. During your sessions, you can learn how to improve your time management and organization skills, reduce your impulsive behavior, develop better problem-solving skills, improve your relationships, and improve your self-esteem overall.

While cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is most often used for ADHD, Dr. McGuire will determine the right approach for your specific symptoms and needs.
