What is Therapy?
Therapy (also known as psychotherapy or talk therapy) is a form of treatment for a wide variety of mental health disorders. It can also help many people work through challenging life situations. Therapy can take the form of individual sessions, couples therapy, or group therapy. At Cottonwood Psychiatry, we specialize in individual and couples therapy.
Therapy sessions are specialized meetings where you talk with your psychiatrist about some aspect (or aspects) of your life that are causing you emotional distress. Whether you’re struggling with the symptoms associated with a mental illness or certain life circumstances, Dr. McGuire can help you discover the right solutions for you.
What Therapy Can Treat?
Therapy can address a wide variety of concerns, and how many sessions you require will differ wildly from person to person.
Therapy can be highly effective in helping with depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, and many other mental health problems. It can also help you address challenging life circumstances like the death of a loved one or pet, divorce, break-up, loss of a job, chronic illness, and more. If you’re struggling with emotional distress for any reason, therapy may be right for you.

Therapy Options at Cottonwood Psychiatry
At Cottonwood Psychiatry, we offer four different therapeutic approaches: cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and psychodynamic therapy.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, is a scientifically-proven technique that works to help you see how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. During your sessions, Dr. McGuire will teach you effective coping skills and show you how you can change your negative thought patterns and behaviors, allowing you to better handle difficult challenges and experience a better quality of life.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a type of talk therapy and is based on CBT, but is customized for patients who experience intense emotions and have difficulty regulating their emotions. Through your sessions, you will start to understand how your thoughts affect your emotions and your behaviors. DBT can help patients accept their lives and behaviors while also allowing them to learn how they can change their unhelpful behaviors. It is often used for those with substance use disorder, eating disorders, PTSD, depression, and anxiety.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps patients move beyond their negative thoughts and feelings. With ACT, you will start to accept that your thoughts and emotions are appropriate responses to certain situations and commit to making changes that match your values. This type of therapy focuses on having patients understand that having negative thoughts doesn’t make you a bad person and that you can move past them and rewire your brain so those negative thoughts don’t take over. ACT can be effective for addiction, anxiety, depression, eating disorders, OCD, and more.
Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy is primarily used to treat depression and other serious mental health disorders. It is a form of talk therapy that works to focus on your past and how it affects your present thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It also helps you understand your unconscious thoughts, desires, and memories, and how they may be affecting your current life.
