Life’s transitions come in many forms. Some arrive unexpectedly, while others take shape slowly over time. A new job, a relationship ending, a move to a new city, or even physical changes in midlife can leave us feeling uncertain and emotionally off balance. At Cottonwood Psychiatry, we understand that navigating these seasons of change can be both challenging and deeply transformative.

Understanding Life Transitions

A life transition is more than just a change in circumstances. It can also affect how we see ourselves and how we relate to the people around us. Whether the shift is external, such as retirement or a loss, or internal, like reevaluating personal goals, these moments often bring mixed emotions. The combination of excitement, grief, relief, and anxiety can feel confusing, making it difficult to find your footing.

For many individuals, counseling provides a supportive space to explore these feelings and gain clarity. This process helps you reconnect with your values and discover practical tools for coping and growth.

The Role of Compassionate Guidance

Dr. Colleen McGuire, DO, offers a warm and collaborative approach to care at Cottonwood Psychiatry. As a Board-Certified Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine specializing in Psychiatry, Dr. McGuire integrates her medical expertise with a deep understanding of human behavior. With a background in Anthropology and Music from the University of New Mexico, pre-med studies in Denver, and medical training at Touro University in California, she brings a well-rounded and thoughtful perspective to her work.

After completing her residency at the University of Colorado, where she served as Chief Resident, Dr. McGuire has worked in diverse clinical settings, including inpatient, outpatient, and telepsychiatry. She is well known for her focus on trauma recovery, midlife hormonal challenges, and alternatives to medication, often using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Her compassionate approach prioritizes collaboration and patient empowerment, encouraging people to take active roles in their healing process.

Finding Stability During Change

When you experience a life transition, it is common to lose your sense of stability. You might notice changes in sleep, energy, or concentration, or feel an ongoing sense of restlessness. These are natural responses to stress. With effective support and counseling, most individuals start noticing improvement within a few weeks, although recovery times vary depending on personal factors and the nature of the change.

In counseling, the goal is not to erase the discomfort but to build resilience and insight. Together, you and your provider explore ways to align your daily choices with your values, giving you a stronger foundation for moving forward. Many people find that with time and guidance, a difficult transition can become a powerful opportunity for self-discovery and renewed purpose.

Taking the Next Step

At Cottonwood Psychiatry, our care is grounded in empathy, collaboration, and clinical excellence. Dr. McGuire and the team work closely with each patient to create individualized treatment plans that respect personal goals and unique life circumstances. If you or someone you know is struggling with a major change, reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.
