What are Mood Issues?
Mood issues refer to a broad range of conditions that affect emotional regulation, energy levels, motivation, and overall mental well-being. While everyone experiences mood changes, persistent symptoms that interfere with daily functioning warrant careful evaluation and attention. Mood-related concerns can include depression, bipolar disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), substance-induced mood disorders, and other conditions that affect emotional health. However, mood symptoms do not always exist in isolation. Sleep disturbances, anxiety, ADHD, chronic pain, medical conditions, life stressors, and past experiences can all influence how you feel emotionally. Understanding these connections is often an important step toward finding relief.
When Mood Symptoms Don’t Have a Clear Answer
Many patients come to Dr. McGuire feeling frustrated because they know something isn’t right, but they don’t fully understand why. They may feel exhausted, unmotivated, emotionally overwhelmed, disconnected from activities they once enjoyed, or unable to function the way they used to.

A Comprehensive Approach to Understanding Mood Changes
Dr. McGuire begins with a 60-minute comprehensive psychiatric consultation to fully understand your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, medications, and life experiences. Rather than focusing solely on a diagnosis, the goal is to understand how different aspects of your health may interact. Mood symptoms can sometimes be influenced by coexisting mental health conditions, physical health concerns, medication effects, chronic stress, or unresolved trauma. Identifying these patterns can help create a clearer and more effective treatment strategy. When appropriate and with your permission, Dr. McGuire can collaborate with your existing providers to ensure recommendations support a coordinated approach to care.
Treatment Recommendations
Every treatment plan is individualized based on your symptoms, history, and goals. Following your consultation, Dr. McGuire will provide personalized recommendations that may include therapy, medication considerations, additional evaluations, lifestyle interventions, or collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
Medication Considerations
For some individuals, medication can play an important role in improving mood stability and reducing symptoms. Depending on your needs, recommendations may include antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or other psychiatric medications. Careful review of your current treatment plan can also help determine whether adjustments or further evaluation may be beneficial.
Therapy Recommendations
Therapy remains one of the most effective tools for addressing mood-related concerns. Depending on your individual circumstances, recommendations may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), psychodynamic therapy, trauma-informed approaches, or other evidence-based treatments that support long-term emotional wellness.
